A key goal of RUTAP is job creation and encouraging small high technology firms. RUTAP provided technical assistance to Princeton University. That assistance resulted in the spin-out of a high technology firm named Primis Technologies, LLC, a Delaware LLC formed in November 2007. The goal of the firm is to commercialize a new form of laser called the Quantum Cascade Laser.
These lasers have Homeland Security, EPA and Military significance because they can detect minute amounts (parts per billion) of organic compounds in real time. Possible uses include the detection of IEDs on the battlefield, explosives coming into US ports and the detection of environmental contaminants at a very early stage. Princeton RUTAP assembled a team of 8 MBA students (3 with technical Ph.D.s) for 5 months to develop a business plan, structure the firm and spin out the company.
